VANCOUVER MURAL FESTIVAL
Inspired by Hokusai’s The Great Wave, this design offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese art. As a Japanese-Cantonese immigrant to Canada, this mural was an exploration cultural identity by abstracting classic iconography such as Ukiyo-E waves and traditional floral patterns to offer viewers a fresh perspective.
Floating smoke elements, styled after manga speech bubbles, symbolize a "breath of fresh air" against the composition. By blending traditional and modern aesthetics, the work reflects the duality of Vancouver’s vibrant Asian and immigrant communities, a recurring theme my practice. 2020.
